The Annual Kyi-Yo Pow Wow takes place each April at the University of Montana in Missoula. This year, the event is on Friday April 15 and Saturday April 16, 2011. We look forward to welcoming Pow Wow attendees at our Missoula Bed and Breakfast.
The Pow Wow is a celebration of Native American culture in specific, and different cultures in general. The intent is to increase cultural awareness on the University of Montana campus and in the greater Missoula community.
The Kyi-Yo Pow Wow is one of the oldest and largest student-hosted pow wows in the country. Native American students on the University of Montana campus created a club to support one another in the early 1950s; they also hoped to increase awareness about Native American issues on campus. The club became a formal entity in the mid 1960s, taking the name Kyi-Yo, which means bear in the Blackfeet language. Since that time, they have sponsored a number of events – like the Pow Wow – to raise awareness and bring people community together.
The University of Montana has one of the highest enrollments of Native American students in the state. When the community attends events such as the annual Pow Wow, we support those students in an integral way.
Each year, we open our Bed and Breakfast Missoula to folks who come to town specifically for the Kyi-Yo Pow Wow. We hope to see that continue in years to come.
