Hike the Blue Mountain Trail in Missoula

The Blue Mountain Trail is actually just one part of a network of trails in the Blue Mountain Recreation Area.  As we mentioned before, Blue Mountain is also one of the few peaks that can be reached by car.  You’d need to drive up Forest Service roads 365 and 2137, and there you’ll find an old fire lookout that offers spectacular views of the Missoula and Bitterroot Valleys.
If you want to hike through the Lolo National Forest, you have a number of options, ranging from short 1/4 mile jaunts on the Blue Mountain Nature Trail to a long 9.8-mile trek along the Blue Mountain Lookout Trail. However you choose to proceed, the Blue Mountain Trail Head is located on Forest Hill Lane, just off Highway 93.
Generally, any of the trails on the Blue Mountain Trail network are best used between the months of May and November. Besides just enjoying plenty of forested scenery, the trails also provide excellent opportunities for viewing wildlife, and in the spring are replete with stunning wildflowers.
Many of these trails are dog-friendly, too, so if you happen to have your favorite four-legged friend with you, this is a great place to stretch everyone’s legs. Did we mention some of the guest rooms in the Hawk Hill House at our Missoula MT Bed and Breakfast are pet-friendly?  That’s right!  Now you can bring your four-legged companions along as you hike the Blue Mountain Trail in Missoula.
As great as the Blue Mountain Trail network is, there is so much more great hiking in Missoula. Here’s a great Missoula hiking guide to get you started – and don’t forget your best local resource; our Innkeepers!
