We’ve long said Missoula is a winter wonderland worth visiting, so if you haven’t had a chance to discover all the great things to do in Missoula in winter yet, this year is a great opportunity! One of our favorite ways to spend a wintry afternoon is on the Missoula Nordic Ski Trails in the area.
A great resource for all things cross-country skiing is the Missoula Nordic Ski Club. They keep track of trail conditions, races, classes, and more, so you can make the most of your Missoula Nordic ski adventure. There are plenty of great Missoula Nordic Ski Trails to explore in the area. We’ve listed several of our favorites below!
- The best place to find Missoula Nordic ski trails is the Lolo Pass Recreation area on the border between Idaho and Montana. Lolo Pass Montana is truly a one-stop destination for all the best winter recreation. You can expect to find 8 miles of groomed cross-country skiing trails here.
- If you’re looking for Missoula Nordic Ski Trails close to town, head to Rattlesnake Recreation Area. There are 8km of groomed Nordic trails here, but the ungroomed trails in the area are also an option. They are popular for fat tire bikers and snowshoers!
- Just outside of downtown Missoula is the Pattee Canyon Recreation Area, part of the Lolo National Forest. Here, you’ll find 6 miles of groomed Missoula Nordic Ski Trails and even more miles of ungroomed trails that are perfect not only for Missoula Nordic skiing but snowshoeing as well. If you have a dog with you, you’ll want to stick to the ungroomed Crazy Canyon Trail.
- Head to the Lubrect Experimental Forest for some fantastic dog-friendly Nordic skiing through a stunning forested wonderland. Here, there are 20 incredible miles of Missoula Nordic Ski TRails, ranging from short and easy to long and challenging. Try these trails at twilight for a truly mesmerizing experience.
- Though it’s a bit farther from downtown Missoula, another great place in the area for Nordic Skiing is the Seeley Creek Nordic Ski Trails. There are 18km of trails here that are groomed specifically for Nordic skiing but, as with most other areas on this list, there are some other trails in the area that invite further exploration on snowshoes.
