Visit the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge

The Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge is a 2800-acre natural paradise along the Bitterroot River. It’s located in Stevensville, about 30 minutes south of Missoula. The Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge, also a part of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, was set aside for conservation in the 1960s, primarily to protect migratory birds that moved through the surrounding wetlands. Today, nearly 250,000 people a year visit this incredible natural habitat!

Over the years, around 235 bird species have been documented at the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge, with more than 100 nesting in this area yearly. In addition to native and migratory birds, plenty of other mammals, amphibians, and reptiles call the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge home, making it a great spot to see some of Montana’s wildlife up close.

Nature trails wind through the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge, and the area is home to several recreational opportunities. In addition to hiking and birdwatching, you can also enjoy fishing, hunting, photography, and biking along Wildfowl Lane.
